Whole-Home Rebuild + Hobby-Focused Retreat

A Residence design concept for a wooded property where the existing home no longer worked for the owners. The project retained the existing foundation while creating a much larger, more functional home for multi-generational living, storage, and outdoor-focused hobbies.

Project type

Whole-home rebuild and hobby-focused residential retreat

Existing problem

The existing home and layout no longer supported the family’s storage, hobby, vehicle, and multi-generational living needs.

Design response + deliverables

Use the value of the original site and foundation while creating a larger, more functional home organized around daily life and hobby use.

Proposed first-floor and basement plans, exterior concept imagery, and whole-home residential design coordination.

The challenge

The existing home and layout no longer supported how the family needed to live.

The owners had a home in that no longer worked for their needs. Rather than starting over on a completely different property, the design explored renovating and rebuilding the father’s house to create a larger, more useful home.

The project needed to support their daughter living with them, improve everyday function, and add meaningful storage for the many hobbies connected to the wooded setting, including ing and fishing in the nearby woods and streams.

Design priorities

  • Retain and reuse the existing foundation where practical
  • Create a much larger and more functional home
  • Support multi-generational living
  • Add flexible space for storage, hobbies, and outdoor equipment
  • Improve the relationship between the home, decks, garage, and wooded site
  • Provide a basement garage and lower-level access for practical daily use

Existing conditions

The proposed basement provides garage space, lower-level living area, deck access, and practical storage/function below the expanded home.

Design response

A full transformation without losing the value of the original site and foundation.

The Residence concept uses the existing property as the anchor for a much more capable home. The design keeps the wooded setting and practical foundation relationship while creating a larger residence with room for family, hobbies, storage, outdoor living, and everyday comfort.

The result is not simply a bigger house. It is a design response to a specific way of living: family under one roof, a rural wooded site, outdoor recreation, and the need for practical space that works every day.

Project outcome

The proposed home gives the owners a clear path to transform an existing family property into a long-term residence that better supports family, function, storage, hobbies, and the surrounding landscape.
